Arrow Crown Molding (where to nail)

Does crown molding normally get attached to the walls (2x4s on side) or the ceiling (joists) via nailing?

...or both if possible?

nailing

For walls with the joists perpendicular you nail to both studs and joists. For walls parrallel to the joists you'll need to install blocking.

The top 2 ˝ inches of a wall should be solid wood. (double top plate)

If your crown extends more than that, find a stud.

For the ceiling, I am assuming its existing so adding backer blocks would be impractical or impossible. So either find a joist and if the joists are parallel then try “toe-nailing” it through the sheetrock.

The hardest part of Crown Molding is cutting the corners.

Good luck to you.
