Shadow Box for Dining Room

Having just finished installing my Chair rail, i was thinking i might want to do shadow boxes below it ( i really like that looK ), but not sure what goes into it. Can someone link me to a really good tutorial and tell me what type of trim I would need?

By shadow box, I am assuming you are talking about using flat chair rail molding in a square pattern to dress up the lower portion of the wall, under the real chair rail.
Your main concern should be with finding dead center of the wall and working to the edges with the same size squares, or making sure you end on about a half square, so the design will carry around the wall.
A good miter saw, glue and finish nails should do the trick.
This is a very elegant touch to a larger room. Just take your time and draw them out with a thin pencil before you attach them if you need to. Post back if we can help further.
