Baseboards - what type is best

We will be replacing baseboards ourselves and am trying to find what is best.
I had read there was a PVC type that was moisture resistant. I saw something to that effect at HD but it was in the exterior finishing section. But honestly I was just scanning quickly.
We have cats that do spray the walls and were hoping to find something that won't absorb it and minimize my cleaning efforts.
Recommendations? Where best to buy...local home improvement stores, surplus stores, online?

If it is not in a basement, I like using MDF preprimed moldings. Easy to cut, cope, nail and finish with very little problems down the road. Cats, neuter 'em, then they won't spray. They have no need to mark their territory.

I'm partial to real wood and stain, but MDF is a great choice if you're going to paint.

Applying a coat of paint [or varnish/poly] to all 4 sides of the base should protect it well. Caulking the top lip to the wall will help even more.

I've never been fond of the plastic/pvc type imitation woodwork.
