Newel Stair Post - Carpet install?

Should I install the newel post up off the basement cement floor for them to tuck the carpet under like you would do baseboard or down on the floor for them to carpet around? Attaching the post to the front side of the bottom stair.

Thanks!

Chris

As long as the newel post has good support from adequate bolting, etc. then holding it up is a nice thing to do for the carpet guys. It really isn't necessary, as they will get over it. We usually work pretty well together as trades, since the trim goes down before they get there. Holding trim molding a little high really makes their job go easier.
