How should I fix this baseboard gap?

The baseboard in my stairs has separated from the wall slightly. The gap is probably a 1/4 inch at its largest and runs about 5 feet or so. I'm wondering if I should simply caulk the gap or if I should try to reattach the baseboard with nails then caulk it.

Is there a correct way to do this?

If you can draw it up securely, that would be best, otherwise caulk it as is.
