What to do about baseboards and crown

I am remodeling the family room. We have soffitts in a large part of the room. I have decided to use the 4" crown around the soffitts to give a faux tre ceililng. My question is do I then use the 4" baseboard or 3"?
The ceilings are 8' but the soffitt is about 12" .
Thanks in advance for your suggestion. I had thought I would do the 4" on both but now think maybe the 4" crown and 3" base?!?

One rule of thumb indicates that a 6 inch base for a 9 foot ceiling, 4 inch base for 8 foot ceiling. It seems to me that a 3 inch base would look too narrow as well as being difficult to find.

Hope this helps.

Bigger moldings always look better. 3" base looks cheap. Only thing 3" base is good for is stacking with other moldings to build up a 8-10 crown.
