Post Trim around heat registers

I started putting new trim in the living room. After completing it I think it looks a little funny to me. I cut at a 45 deg angle into the register. Is there anything I can do to make this look better? Am I being too critical and merely painting the wood would make it look better? If this is what I do I'll have to do the finish the rest of the house like this.

I wonder if that is a cold air return, and if so, you need a 7/8" thick box style cold air return grille like this.

Otherwise if it is a heat register, you could use one like this.
