Window/Door Trim

Can window trim in a room be different than the door trim in the room? Are there rules to trim being uniform throughout a house or has that gone be the wayside?

IMO it looks best if all the casing is the same style. It helps to tie all the rooms together.

I think the issue we have is, most of the rooms have that old fluted stuff, and the kitchen we redid, has plan old 1x4. I guess as we go room to room, we can replace.

Various styles of back banding can be added to the outside perimeter of a 1x4 to dress it up.
