dthemurph (Can I Stain over Paneling)

I have an older home and the previous ower had two rooms with dark wood paneling. I'm on a fixed income and can't afford to replace it now. Is it possible to stain over it to make it lighter. The rooms are to dark for me.

Welcome to the forums

In a word, no

You could paint it a lighter color but you would need to strip it first and re-stain with the lighter color to get a lighter colored stained finish

that was weird, I went to post my reply and landed on another thread

Ok let me try again, it would be next to impossible to strip the paneling well enough for a lighter stain to work. To paint, you need to scuff sand, coat the paneling with a solvent based primer and then paint with 2 coats of your choice of latex paint.

More lighting would be another option.
