How to paint/stain plastic molding

The house I purchased has plastic molding that is white. I would like to know how I can paint or stain it so it looks more like natural wood. I prefer a lighter wood color not a dark brown color. Your thoughts/opinions/expertise would be most appreciated! Thanks!

It's never going to look like wood.
A light sanding and acrylic latex paint will work.
Plastic can not be stained.

Welcome to the forums Barb!

As Joe said, plastic doesn't accept stain although it might be possible to apply a faux finish to it, painting is cheaper/quicker. Have you considered replacing the plastic with real wood?
