We recently had a tree fall on our house...thankfully no one was hurt and everything that was destroyed can be replaced. Upon inspecting the destruction area, I discovered 2X6 ceiling joist that appear to be either douglas fir or redwood. Obviously there's a huge difference in the price per foot so I'd like to determine the type of lumber that was used and use that in the insurance estimate.

Here's some background info:
beams are 20 feet in length
the clapboard siding has been determined to be Redwood
house was built in 1953
house is located in Atlanta
the sample I took to HomeDepot matched up favorably with the Douglas Fir trim pieces but both of lumber guys in that store felt it was redwood

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Go with the Doug Fir. It is cheaper than redwood IF you can even get redwood. Structurally it is better too.
