Fill wide gap between trim and wall.

What is a good way to fill the gap, so that I can caulk it after?

There is a wide gap between the trim and the wall. I couldn't get the trim closer because the wall is masonary and I had to glue the trim instead of nailing it. I wanna fill the gap and then caulk it. Because if I just caulk it without filling the gap, the caulk will drop down the gap.

Anyplace it's 1/4 or so you can insert foam backer rod then caulk it.
