Baseboard molding install

So we bought some new 5 x 1/2 inch baseboards and our hardwood has a spot with gaps at the wall…. should I just buy thicker baseboards? or what could I use for filler behind the baseboards to give the extra width? Also: do you think 1/2 inch is too thin for baseboards regardless? We are starting to second guess the purchase….

1/2" is standard for baseboard although it does come thicker. I'd nail down what you have and then install shoe mold.

1. Redo the flooring with smaller gaps at the ends.
2. Get thicker baseboard molding to cover the gap.
3. Install shoe or quarter round molding at the base of the baseboard to cover the gap.

Leaning towards buying 5/8 inch thick baseboards, do you think I could still use 1/2 inch thick door molding with the thicker baseboards or would they need to be thicker as well? thanks!

IMO it looks best if the base is either the same thickness or thinner.

Are you sure 1/8" extra would be enough throughout all seasons?

Don't think 1/8" is going to cover that giant gap. Get base shoe.
