Question

I had contracted some folks to replace some siding on my 25 year old house that was rotting on the north side around the window.
It was part of purchase for my new windows. I buy the windows and they will replace the siding for me free.

Anyway, they say they are looking for this masonite siding but they can't find it because they went out of business.
I think they are giving me the run around and am not sure what to do?? Is there a suitable replacement?

What is involved with replacing portions of siding on a home? This is about a 10' x 10' section.

Thanks,
Shawn

denverlynx,
They could use standard exterior plywood sheets, but the cost will undoubtably be yours to bear.

denverlynx,

Either your contractor is terribly misinformed or he's outright lying through his teeth.

Masonite is alive and well and stocked in hundreds of building supplies across the country, including the one I work for.

George,

Would a regular retailer like Home Depot carry it?

Thanks

Its true that they didn't go out of business. But, there website does state that they discontinued their siding products in March. So, I guess my contractor was sort of right...there must be suitable replacements? Right?

denverlynx,
I've already suggested the suitable product - plywood.
Masonite, I thought, was not a great siding material even though it had been used for years. I was curious so I searched Google for masonite and problems. Check it out:
sidingclaims.com
Put up the ply and cover it with a vapor barrier.

denverlynx,
there is a couple different companies that make siding similar to Masonite. they are ABTCO and Temple. The lumber company i work for has carried both and customers seem to prefer the ABTCO brand. this is the predominant siding of choice in Southern New Mexico (i don't know if it is in Denver) and ABTCO seems to be the most comparable. GOOD LUCK!
