Question Want fake ceiling beams.

Hello all,

I'd like to add fake ceiling beams in my family room. I heard there used to be styrofoam ones that were easy to install. Do they still make those, and where would someone get them?

Otherwise, I can just build some myself. Does anyone have any plans for this, or good ideas for how to it. I need 3 at about 11.5' each.

Thanks in advance.

Cool

I believe that you can still get those styrofoam faux beams.
Just check around at building supply companies. They may have to order some for you.
However, you can make boxed beams yourself. For three 11.5' beams, you'll need three 12' 2X4s and nine 12' 1X6s and finishing nails.
Just nail the 2X4s to the ceiling joists (right over the drywall ceiling) with 16b nails. Measure and pop chalk lines so that they will be straight.
Once you have the 2X4s up, you can nail the 1X boards to them in a box (two sides and a bottom) along the length of the 2X4s.
You can 45 the edges to make them appear to be solid beams (you'll need to rip down the bottom boards to width on a table saw), or you can have the bottom piece wider than the sides.
You can add decorative wood molding.
Stain or prime-and-paint the boards before nailing them up, and then just touch them up once they're in place. Use finishing nails and wood putty the counter-sunk nailheads.
You can design your own beams.
Good Luck!
Mike
