fence posts round
I want to use those round fence posts you see in the country inside my house as fake beams on my ceiling. My question is these are not kinlin dried on anything, just the bark is stripped off, and should I be worried about bugs. If I should be worried is there anything I can spray on them to kill the bugs. Thanks for you help. Ken Paterson

Ken,
Commercially, at the farm bureau(Southern States here) you can buy pressure treated posts - sorta green. Me and my farmer neighbors go out and cut cedar or even better yet is locust for posts. These are somewhat bug resistant but not 100 percent safe. KD will kill bugs and prevent shrnkage, but most all shrinkage is crosswise and not lengthwise. Anything not pre-treated could be sprayed with a strong pesticide.
You've taken on quite a project, attaching them will also be a chore. Have you looked at all the synthetic options, some look pretty good.

more info please
Thanks Fred for your reply, you mentioned KD that will kill bugs and stop shrinkage. Was is the proper name for KD and do I just spray it on or let them soak in it. I am looking at Cedar posts so the stain will look better than on pressure treated. As for "fake" posts that you mentioned I have never seen them and don't know where to look. Thanks and any further info would be appreciated.

Ken,
The KD is the kiln drying (baking) process most lumber goes through to kill insects and take the moisture content down to about 8 or 10 percent. Any 'virgin' cedar posts you pick up will probably not be KD. And stripping the bark off cedar (very stringy)
will be tedious. Some other pesticide would have to be applied to guarantee bug eradication.
Another option would be to use rough cut cedar lumber(1x6s) applied to ceiling-secured 2x4s for a square beam effect.
I've seen the synthetic beams in some of the regular home centers - Lowes, etc.
