T & G Pine ceilings

I am installing T & G pine ceilings in my house (new construction). The tongue and groove seem very tight when installing. Are there any tricks that might be helpful, and should they be that tight? They are 3/4 x 6. I have been using a rubber mallet, and am afraid that I will break the groove. Thanks for any help anyone might be able to provide.

to copy a phrase, tight is right. you want them to join as a "unit" not individual strips. make sure your seams are staggered to avoid a pattern of dips.

Use a pounding block, like a piece of 2x4, to protect the grooves.
