Question Lumber for stairway

I have several steps on a 36" wide stairway with broken wood, what thickness and type of wood should I replace them with. There is no center support!

Cool

Stairs are usually made of hardwood, such as oak, because of all of the wear and tear.
Get the same thickness as the existing treads, so that the rise will remain the same (usually 7.5") from step to step.
Good luck!
