Baby names

If you type 'baby names' into your favorite search engine you will find many websites with lots of choices. Some prefer a family name or a combination of family names from both sides of the family.

Popular baby names also tend to vary by state and/or region. Spellings of names also tend to vary greatly.

Go to http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ to find an interesting website where the Social Security Administration has a data base that can be searched for popular names by decade.

Top boy names in Kansas for 2002:
1. Jacob
2. Ethan
3. Andres
4. Joshua
5. Zachary

Congratulations!

#1 name in the world...James Mattison....hands down the best....in my usless opinion.

Just be sure his name don't rhyme very well with words kids will make fun of him with and on the same line his initials shouldn't spell out anything he won't want to live with.

Names

Good point, mattison, about the initials. Mine were P. P. To say the least, I had my share of teasing in elementary school.

A name can have impact on a childs profeassoinal future and how people think of them before even meeting them. Lawyers named Bubba are few and far between. So are tradesman named Thurston. I would choose a name with some tie to your family's heritage, either a first name that has some commonality to the family of both parents or the family's nation of origin.

Naming a child is serious business, isn't it!? I know that I wrote my children's names down a million times before I could choose what I thought would be great. Cursive, print, initials, etc. I have four children so I've gone through this four times LOL.

I was trying to follow the tradition in our family of naming the first boy using my maiden name as the middle name. My first husband wanted a junior, so that didn't happen. I did it with my second child, but trying to find a first name to go with Anthony Smith was tough. I liked the name William, but Will Smith wouldn't fly at the time for me.

For some ideas I'll tell you what the deciding factor was in my children's names:

first born simply a jr to his father - John Lee Harris, Jr. John is too common in their family (my son was the fourth, and his sister also named another child John) so I agreed only if we could call him Lee.

second child - daughter is named Frances Elizabeth. Two reasons for the name Elizabeth. One being that as a child we had a housekeeper named Elizabeth. I adored her. As an adult I had a boss named Elizabeth. She was amazing in that she was very much a female, but didn't have the emotional states at work like most females I knew. Very balanced and professional. Downfall - a very long name for a child to learn to spell and write. We also call her by her middle name, but Frances has been handed down to the females on my mother's side for generations and I didn't want to be the one to break the pattern.

My third child is named Meagan Elyse. I had to watch the spelling so the name would 'flow' when written. I also didn't want it to be Megan since I wanted it to sound more southern as may-gen, not meg-en. Problem, she was called Mee-gen by those reading her name (dr's office's, etc). Maegan just looked funny, period LOL.

My final child, the boy, is Ian Anthony Smith. I thought about Brian, but wanted something a little different. My SIL at the time suggested Ian. Downfall - no one knows how to pronounce it. Most call him eye-an.

Good luck in choosing the name, and congratulations! I'm proud that you are thinking seriously about the child's name. I went to school with three kids: Wendy, Sandy and Rocky Beach. I kid you not!

Thanks for all the replies. Still nothing yet. My wife came up with Camden the other day. I'm not sure I like that. We will let you know.

hi,I agree that names should have a significant meaning behind them. I strongly suggest not to name your son Camden, for this reason , I live in Philadephia Pennsylvania , the main river that divides us from new jersey is the delaware river on the other side is camden, new jersey. Camden is a poverty stricken city . Campbell Soup factory was the main source of employment for years untill it closed down leaving high unemployment and a high crime rate to this poverty strickend area, in the past several years they have been trying to revitalize the area with a waterfront aquarium and the sports area built there also the ship the SS New Jersey is home on the docks now.. but I mean no disrespect to anyone living in camden ,my mom was born there, but I would not put that image onto my child by naming him after that city

I have a real problem with these modern names. They just sound ridiculously lame and they're only going to get the kid picked on.

My wife and I are expecting our first baby in late May/early June. We're going to name him Jonathan.

Other names we liked were Daniel, Jesse and Paul.

Get yourself a baby name book. There are also websites that deal specifically with baby names.

Congrats!
Bob

How about

Dawson. Yes this is my name but was originally my Great great Gmom's maiden. Was tough as a kid when I was growing up in that the question I always got was "what's your first name"

No longer a problem with show "Dawson's Creek" but now I get Mr. Creek etc etc.

Still loved the name then and love it now. Sets me apart from the mainstream but very much in the Alpha pak.

Stand out

D

Oh my son's name is Quinten Tate. QT, Q, Quinn, Tate,

When we have our next baby I was thinking of the name Keeler or Rowan

I only have one son.

Jonathan Walker Bartlett.

No, he's not named after the alcohol. Well, at least that's what I told my wife.

Ok, seriously... Actually, my grandfather's name is Walker. My middle name, my father's name, my brother's name is John. So, there you go.

Should we have a girl, she'll be Samantha Lee. My wife's maiden name is Sam, and Lee was her grandfather's last name.

We're a simple people...

The name does affect people's preconceptions of a person.

But more importantly for the child - the parent's preconceptions. Think about it.

We made a list and cast it around but waited to meet our child before deciding. The funny thing was that everyone knew which name suited him once they'd seen him - we all agreed. The risk there is going for a cutsie name in the blur of the moment.

I always like Diego but my wife hated it. I guess it all depends on how unique you want the name to be. There are tons of "safe" names you could use but isn't that way too boring?
