1987 Dodge Dakoto Auto Trans

I recently purchased a 1987 Dodge Dakota LE, 3.9 L eng, w/auto trans. It has 178,000 miles and I assume the tranny is original. I cannot find the tag on it. VIN, 1B7GN1 4MOHS(5?)1 30007. The trans is full of fluid. When you first start up and take off the trans works fine, but after awhile, I assume when the trans gets to operating temp it starts to slip. You can shut it off for a little while then go again. Am I looking at maybe something simple or am I looking at an overhaul?
Thank You.

if the transmision fluid is dark in color or has a burnt smell to it, it may help to have the fluid and filter changed at that time if the problem still occurs you are likely going to have to have it rebuilt or replaced with a remanufactured transmission.
