Unhappy Auto. fuel door is now manual

I have a 1992 eagle premeir es and it runs great. Unfortunately, the fuel door releases from inside, opens but then does not close after I fuel up.

I have tried to spray wd40 on the rusting spring but to no avail. All I can do is use a pliers each time to pull the plastic part from inside the spring. The the door closes, but not tight.

Any ideas on how to fix it or what to try next? I hate admitting defeat. IT is a pain especially in the rain.

Sounds like a broken latch or binding cable, requiring replacement.

The latch on the door seems fine. So it must be the cable.

Is it a do it yourself job and, if so, how do I get at the binding cable- In the trunk or from the fuel door?

If not, how much should this cost to repair?

Check the links in my signature file below for some ideas, most notably the autolibrary link as I have it bookmarked.
