1977 VW bus question

I know this will be vague, but any help would be appreciated.

I have a 77 VW bus and I'm getting a loud banging noise from the engine. It started a long time ago (like 1 year) and it's gradually getting worse. The noise used to stop after it warmed up, but now it's almost constant. The engine passes smog and runs strong, but it's just loud. The noise basically happens rhythmically with each cylinder. Rods? Valves? Any ideas? I put new heads on it about two years ago and I was told that the internal parts were still in great shape. I hardly drive it, so I'm hoping it's not a major issue. Thanks!

Retorque the cylinder heads. The nuts work loose over time & the engine gets noisey. Common problem on these old beasts.
