Ignition Stuck

I can't get the key for my wife's 1994 Ford Escort LS Wagon (1.9L engine - automatic) to turn. I've tried jammimg the steering wheel to the left and right because friends have told me that this could loosen the pin, which is probably the cause of the problem. I've also made sure that the transmission is all the way up in park. I've tried jiggling the key while jammimg the steering wheel to the left and right - nothing. I'm afraid to turn the wheel too hard because I don't want to do any serious damage to it. I'm also afraid to try to turn the key with pliers because I don't want to snap the key. Any ideas???

The column on most Fords is clamshelled and the lower shroud comes off.

Then the lock should come out...see the autolibrary link I have below for more help.
