Fuel leak in Buick
I am trying to find a fuel leak in a 1992 Buick Roadmaster. I have ruled out using a Zippo to locate the leak. Any other ideas?
Thanks, Bobbie

Yes, the gas odor is strong but the main thing was the drop in the gas guage. It went from half a tank to empty in less that 15 miles. Considering that I usually get over 20 mpg, I figure there is something wrong.

May just be burning it due to an engine problem. An O2 sensor that goes south, for instance, can take your gas mileage right down the toilet. If bad enough, can also take out the catalytic converter; just had that happen on my wrecker (350 gas Chevy) this year.

I don't see how your engine could run if that much fuel is being delivered in 15 miles. Are you sure that the gauge is reading accurately? Have you filled it up and checked the mileage? It very well could be a sending unit problem. Had a similar complaint from my wife on a '97 Bonneville. Turned out that the gauge was taking forever to go from full to half tank and then would drop to empty in a matter of minutes.

As others have said, how sure are you there is a fuel leak? You usually see stains of fuel and see it on the ground if there's a leak.
In such case, a radiator shop can fix the old tank or replacement is required.
Otherwise, as others have said, it could be USING a lot of fuel.

I appreciate all of your help. I have a 72 Impala that had a fuel line that had a hole in it a couple of years ago. This Buick is my mother's car and she doesn't drive it often. That, added to the fact that we live in the country and have critters that like to chew on car hoses and wiring, make me believe that there is a leak. I have enough knowlege to be dangerous.
