sensor light wont go out

we have a 1986 chevy sprint, the sensor light came on so we had the oxygen sensor replaced and now the light will not go out(unless the switch is off) we were told it will go out after about 50 cycles(on/off, cranking/off)but so far its still on, been over two months,HELP

Depends on the vehicle.

On some models, the sensor light is a one time "time bomb" that turns on and stays on. It is merely a reminder at a certain mileage to check emissions (scare tactic in most cases so you'll have the dealer do the repair). The fix is usually to disconnect it or replace the buzzer.

The other type of light is the "check engine" or emission light. If you've fixed the problem, disconnect and reconnect the battery cable after 10 minutes. That should reset the computer.
