TownCar pwr. window gearset replace

On a '90 Lincoln Town Car, left rear door, the power window gearset has worn out and needs to be replaced.

Is it best to remove the entire regulator/motor assembly, including the window itself to accomplish this, or is it OK to simply remove the motor & gear case to get the job done?

We've done it both ways, but it's easy to scratch the window suncoating when removing and replacing it. But removing the motor/gearcase only means working blind in a very limited space.

Any suggestions?

Service it outside the vehicle. Easier.

Pitch the whole regulator for a new one. Probably more cost effective.
