Power steering play

My '89 Mercury Grand Marquis has just developed excessive play in the steering wheel. The first thing that I checked was the rag joint. The rag joint is just fine. There doesn't appear to be anything bent in the linkages. The Chilton's book mentions an adjustment for center position load to eliminate excessive lash between sector & rack teeth. This adjustment didn't seem to help any. Is it simply time to replace the power steering box or is there a chance of overhaul? What else should I look for? Thanks.

you need to jack up the front end and wiggle each wheel side to side looking for excessive play in tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm etc if the above components chek ok and the play does seem to be coming from gear box it is likely needing to be replaced.

Had same problem on an older chevy 4X4, everything tight but lots of play in steering. Ended up with replacement box
