Question 97 Nissan 4X4 XE King Cab won't start

I have a 2.4 Liter SOHN 4 cyl Manual Engine. I started the truck this morning drove it to the backyard and unloaded the bed and then it wouldn't start. Tried jumping the battery (Nothing), cleaned the terminals (one was very crusty with a white chaulk like substance), tested the battery (reading on guage was FAIR) - Still nothing. Lights work etc. but there is absolutely no response when you turn the key. My husband claims it's been racing lately and won't kick down - If that's in any way related. Any ideas? Where should we begin? Is there anywhere to get a schematic of "under the hood" online? We don't even know exactly where the starter is located. How do test if the starter is getting power?

First start by pitching the battery for a new one, it sounds wiped out.

Clean the terminals well and check for loose and corroded terminals.

Now, start up the truck. See if you have lights, horn, electrical accessories first. If you do, try to crank it. If nothing, rap on the starter with a hammer (on the body of it) and now try cranking. If it starts, bad starter, replace it with a Nissan rebuilt one.

See the autolibrary link in my signature file below for more information.

Starter relay. Very common on these trucks.
