What are typical signs of power steering pump failure?

I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3800 with 107,000mies. I am beginning to notice a faint squealing noise during acceleration. It is especially noticeable when the steering wheel is turned. This is not a belt squeal - more like bearings that are beginning to wear, at this point it is not very loud and the steering appears to be working normally. I have replaced the water pump recently, the alternator and the air conditioner seem to be fine also - so I was curious if this could be a steering pump problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks.

usual signs of pump failure may be making noise lack of power steering and sometimes leaking, you should start by checking fluid level sometimes when it is a little low it will make excessive noise, if it is low there has to be a leak somewhere.
