Transmission Ticking Sound

Car: 1992 Pathfinder, Auto Transmission, 150,000 miles, no prior tranny problems.

Problem: when the engine revs between 3 and 4 thousand rpms, there is a distinct ticking sound that I believe to be coming from the transmission, this happens regardless of the engine temperature, however it seems to be louder when the engine is under strain, (going up a hill, etc.)...it happens in every gear, as well as if i rev it up in neutral, however it seems quiter in that case. Any thoughts on what this could be?

Thanks.

Sure it's tranny related? Might be pinging from a stuffed EGR valve or an exhaust leak.

Does the tranny slip during this troubled time?

I'm not possitive that its the tranny, it was just an assumption I made based on the symptoms of the problem, the tranny does slip occasionally but it has yet to happen in coherence with the noise.
