Sugar in Gas Tank

My daughter had sugar put in her gas tank, its a 1999 Neon. It is now running badly, very sluggish. If it has gotten into the valves is there anything you can run through the gas to disolve it? We intend to drain the gas tank and change the fuel filter, is there anything else we can do short of tearing the engine apart? Can anyone help?

I agree with BeJay.

Also install a locking gas cap when the repairs are done.
