1988 Toyota Corolla 1.6

I have a 1988 Toyota Corolla with a 1.6 4 cylinder, with an automatic transmission. The car idles fine, and runs alright at 50+speeds, but it hesitates and acts like its not getting gas at low speeds. It backfires through the carberator a lot, until it reaches speeds of around 40 or 50. Do you have any help

check your ignition timing if it is slow it will cause backfiring through carb, also check all you ignition components wires , plugs , cap and rotor, for starters.

Might want to consider an overhaul/rebuild on the carburetor, too. How many miles on it?

I agree with both of these guys. Start simple first.

If it hasn't seen maintenance in a while, then it's time.
