automatic transmission is erratic

Car: 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo, v-8 305, 4-speed automatic transmission.
Problem: Sometimes (happened twice over the last 2 weeks), from the get go, the transmission doesnt shift from first to second (till about 40 mph) and then it doesnt shift from second down to third, even at 55 mph. Leave the car sitting overnight, and it works well again next day.

This started happening after a transmission service - before the service, the transmission would slip into high gear at less than 20 mph when the car is hot. This still happens when the transmission is not being erratic. This is a rebuilt transmission with about 30,000 miles since it was installed.

Any ideas for this money pit?

Car is not a money pit, but the mechanics working on it seemingly are creating it as such. This is one of the best vehicles on the road. Easy to fix, roomy, drives well, cheap to fix and straightforward. It just takes someone with a clue to fix it .

It sounds like a poorly rebuilt transmission to me. If the fluid and filter are new and the fluid is up to snuff, it sounds like it was poorly rebuilt .
