Dodge Truck Gas Gauge Problem

Gas gauge is inaccurate. About two years ago it would read some what accurate to half a tank then drop to empty even though there was at least half a tank of gas left. The empty light remained accurate and I would fill up when the light went on.
Now the gauge readings float all over the place and the empty light goes on even though there is plenty (3/4) of gas left in the tank. The next time I start up, the light stays off. Obviously, this makes judging when it is time to fill up a big problem.
Any idea what part has gone bad and how can I fix the problem? Is it the dash board gauge, the tank sensor, or what?

Vehicle Info: 1995, Dodge, RAM 1500, pickup, 5.2L V8, Automatic, VIN: 187HC16Y8SS

Bad sending unit in the tank or pinched/bad ground wire. Dash gauges rarely go bad.

My vote's for the tank sender. In some cases it is part of the fuel pump assembly and can't be bought separately.
