Unhappy 92 Acura Vigor is very hard to start

Can anybody help me? My Vigor, usually in perfect health, has difficulty starting. But oddly, if I "pump" the gear shift up and down rapidly it WILL start, but that's the only thing that will do it. (it's an automatic...) Do I need a new starter? Why would pumping the gear shift up and down start it? Do you know how much starters cost? Thanks so much for any help!

No, the starter's not likely the problem.

The neutral safety switch/inhibitor switch is out of adjustment or bad or the shifter mechanism is dirty/broken parts/hanging up.

By playing with the shifter you are allowing the neutral safety switch to work and there is power to the starter. When things hang up, the switch thinks the car's in gear and you can't start it.

This is a safety feature. Have the switch and shifter linkage/parts checked out.
