power steering leak

My son's 91 Ponitac GP with 3.1 V6 (130K miles) is leaking power steering fluid. Do i fix it or get a new one? (the pump, not the car!) How hard is this job? i have done brakes, starters, water pumps, etc., but not much lately.

if it's the pump

that's leaking, replace it. Are you sure that it's the pump that's leaking rather than a pressure hose or the rack itself?

am trying some stop leak. i believe the pump is leaking. car has 172K miles, not 130K. (car has been away with son at college) What is a rack?

I suggest he have the car checked out professionally. It could be a leaking rack and pinion or a pressure or return line or the pump itself.

Will be tough to pinpoint without seeing the car.

if it's the pump,

but unless you've done it before, I'd leave it to a pro. Not too much room to work around that 3.1. Stop leak only works for so long and I would wager that it's not too good for the seals in the rest of the system.
