Transmission Problems

I have a 1989 Camaro with a 305 Engine that has a bad transmission. Its an automatic with overdrive. I've been trying to find a replacement transmission but I can't locate one in my area that matches with my car. My present transmission is a 700R4 and all I can find is a 700R4 out of an astro van. It fits but I'm not sure it will work properly in my car. I'm in the military stationed overseas and I don't have a lot of time to mess with it so I'd like to replace it if possible instead of going the rebuild route. Can you give me any advice on whether to go with another transmission that fits or wait till I can do a rebuild?

A rebuild on this one shouldn't be that expensive and it is worth the expense of getting it right the first time.

700R4's of this vintage are poor in stock form as they had bad pumps. So a used unit might net you a bad one.

Spend the ducats for a rebuilt...better off.
