egg smell

I read somewhere :"if your car is running poorly or you have a rotten egg smell coming from your exhaust I suggest you take it to a repair shop immediately before it causes permanent damage to various components. "

What exactly that means and what could be the problem. This past summer (in the beginning) everytime I turned the AC ON I smell "like a rotten mouse" coming from the air outlet inside the car. I have a Toyota camry LE 1999 with 40K miles. I checked under the hood, but couldn't find anything. After 3-4 weeks it went away and now there is no smell. Should I be concern.

Thank you.

A rotten egg smell from the exhuast is either due to the brand of gas or the converter is breaking down. In some cars it is "normal" due to the composition of the catalyst.

New enough car, so I would have the dealership check it out for you.

Smell from the A/C vents is a different story. Might be mold or mildew in the vents from non use.
