automatic transmissions

I have an 82 camaro with a 2.8 liter v-6. I start it up, put it into drive, and it barley moves. but reverse works fine. any ideas?

Have you checked the fluid level? What's it look(red or brown)and smell like?(varnish smell?)
Just for information, I owned one of those and the trannies aren't the best. If you end up having to do something with it,have it re-built,don't get another from a yard, then you'll know what you have. It has to be the same tranny anyway,as nothing else will bolt up to the engine or crossmember. Personally,I hated the lockup. It up and down-shifted at random times. Ended up installing a toggle switch to control it. I wouldn't have done it except for 2 GM service managers suggesting it. Funky setup.
