dimming headlights 98 civic

the headlights on my 98 civic hx go from dim to bright (normal, not highbeams) very frequently in the mornings. but it seems that if i drive and then stop somewhere, like for gas or coffee, there are no problems when i and when i start her back up again. any thoughts?

Headlights

You have a loose ground or connection somewhere. Probibly near one of your headlights. When you are driving, that ground or connection is moving or shakeing around so it is getting good contact sometimes, and sometimes not. When you are parked, the connection or ground isn't being rattled around so it wont get dimmer & brighter.

It is normal for it to dim a bit at idle as the alternator is turning slower and hence the output is less.

If it dims when you are at a light and goes up a bit when you tap the gas, it's probably "OK".

You should do an output test on the alternator as noted in my "The Basics" post below.
