Radio Codes

I just changed my battery on my 1998 Grand Prix and discovered that my radio is in "LOC" mode from the theft deterrent system. Is there any way to unlock without bringing it to the dealer who charges to fix this?

What does the owner's manual have to say?

nope

unless you know the unlock code, it's a trip to the dealer.

As is the case on yours, if the previous owner activated the Theftlock feature - if the radio loses power, it assumes that it has been stolen and locks up. Only an unlock code ore a trip to the dealer will unlock it.

By the way, where did the radio come from?

Are you the original owner? If so, you should have the code with your original paperwork. If not, you'll have to visit your dealer.

The dealer will press a series of buttons on the radio & extract a code. He will then call GM with the code and your VIN. GM will provide the dealer with the code to unlock your radio. Make sure the dealer notes the code on your repair order. Keep the code in a safe place in case you need it again.
