Brake Light Problem

Hello All:

I'm having a problem with my wifes car

Honda Civic

Brake lights are stuck on all the time
I have tried just about everything to try to fix reseated fuses Pulled up brake pedal, stepped on brake pedal several times, Turned lights on off Disconnected brake lights & reconnected

But lights are still on

I have to disconnect the battery for them to go off

any explanation for this?

Stuck brake light switch in all likelihood.

Any parts store should have a replacement. A couple of bucks.

You don't mention the year, but see if the autolibrary.org link I have below in my signature file has the R&R procedure on the switch.

Have you tried disconnecting the plug on the breake light switch? If that kills them, bad switch. Also, it is possible for the switch to be far enough out of whack for pulling up the pedal to still not deactivate the switch - check adjustment.

Sometimes this happens when the driver slams on the brake real hard to avoid an accident and sometimes break a leg doing so.This happened to me once and I asked the dammage appraiser as to why the brake light is on all the time after the close call and he told me he has seen it happen before many times and that I bent the brake arm.

Not surprising someone would break a leg with that much force on the brake pedal since it is hardened steel and one of the strongest parts on the entire car.
