98 Firebird

Here's the problem: Can't get the shifter to shift out of park. Starts fine, Tried replacing the Brakelight switch, but no luck. Button still will not press in. It is a 98 firebird w/automatic transmission.

I'm gonna ask a stupid question, I assume you know to do this.

Are you pressing the brake to shift out of park?

Shy of this I'm stumped.

(edit I didn't see the part about not being able to push the button in)

Some vehicles use a shift solenoid/park release solenoid to release the shifter.

Get a hold of a wiring diagram from autolibrary (if they have it) below and see how it works before changing parts on the fly like that .

Cycle the key back and forth a few times. Also, will it shift out of gear with the key turned forward (but not with the engine running)? That will determine if it's a mechanical or electrical problem.

My cousin had this problem with his Taurus, but it would shift out of park with the engine off. Turned out to be a bad brake light switch. Five minute repair on that one.
