Question dummy light 96 jeep 4.0 litre is out

I need help troubleshooting a problem with the engine temperature dummy light. It does not go on at start up and shut off immediately as it should...it does not go on at all. The bulb is fine. I would guess the fuse is fine since the rest of the lights on the dash illuminate. My haynes manual says to test the circuit (Being very unfamiliar with electronics I have no idea how to do this). My manual says to ground the wire to the sending unit with the ignition on, the light should go on if the sending unit needs replacement. How do I ground the wire to the sending unit? Do I simply connect a wire from the sending unit wire and touch something metal on the body of the vehicle?

I actually hate the idea of a dummy light and would prefer a guage. Knuckles had written last time and said that finding an aftermarket temp guage that will fit this vehicle is tough. The hole in the cylinder head is way too small for the guages I have seen.

Thank you all again for your help.

Change the sending unit, it's cheap enough.
