Real Simple Question

What does SOHC and DOHC refer to (talking about engines obviously)? What is the difference between the two? Are there othere types? Thanks!

SOHC=single Overhead cam (1 camshaft)
DOHC=dual overhead camshaft (2 camshafts).

That's the "layman's terms" .

And the other common type would be OHV - overhead valve (cam is in block rather than the head and uses pushrods to actuate the valves).
