Real hard knock/slam ABS

Front wheel drive 1996 Corsica.
On slick iced roads while comming to a stop, when brakes are used the abs kicks in SO HARD that the car rocks as if one was hitting the brakes very hard, very very fast on dry pavment.
It almost feels as if the car is trying to bend in two.
I have learned to put the car in neutral when slowing down,by doing so there is no pounding.
Any ideas guys? This cant be right is it?
This is my first car in 30 years that has abs.

Sounds abnormal. Have the ABS checked out professionally by a competent repair shop.

it's small but costly

Thanks Joe_F
After all these years I finally had them check this problem out.
As it turns out the problem seams to be a bushing on the lower control arm about the size of a half dollar. So after an estimate of $200. I hope this does the job, for if it dont I may have to switch shops although the place I now use is very large, clean, and professional looking.
