2003 chevy truck

I,m thinking of purchasing a new chevy truck with a vortec engine? Does anyone know if it is any good? What about the warranty by G.M.on their new trucks? I haven't owned a chevy for many years! Is it a good decision? Any input is much appreciated!

A friend of mine has a '99 Silverado 4WD w/ the 5.3L Vortec.

It's been virtually flawless so far. Lots of power.

He had a problem with the steering coupler. It was replaced twice under warranty w/ no problem. Beyond that, the truck has been perfect.

Thumbs up

My sister owns a 2002 Tahoe with a 5.3 V8.

It has been flawless, with NO trips to the dealer for issues except for brakes (she complained about the dust) and all I've done is change the oil and filter (a snap to do).

Easy to maintain, roomy, powerful, drives like a Cadillac.

Personally I think it's the best truck on the market. The Tundra is a second choice but more $$$ and less cargo space.

One thought though. Chevy totally screwed up the styling in 2003 IMHO. The GMC, the Silverado twin, is MUCH more stylish and nowhere near as cartoony looking. ALso GMC uses chrome side strips and Chevy uses traditional plastic/chromed plastic side trim. GMC just looks more expensive and I don't think there's a big difference in price. Be sure to consider the Quadrasteer package, so far the ONLY truck in the world with it. Lots of $$$ though.

Vortec 4800, 5300 and 6000 (on 1500 HD crew cab) all good choices. Traditional pushrod technology. Nice features such as roller lifters, 6 bolt mains. Check out gmpowertrain.com for more info.

good engine, but not GEN III Vortec, it's a punched 454.

If you want over the top, then go Duramax 6600 with Alison AT. Unbeatable (this will not doubt start a war )

Gm won't let us inside an allison yet but we have been shipped essential tools. So it will be soon.By the way you can't build these bad boys on a bench, too heavy, have to use a 1000 pound plus engine stand.Talk about beefy!

It's a "Vortec", but probably not the latest round. It's probably a version of the 7.4 vin J engine used previously.

Beefy is an understatement . There was a nice writeup in Motor or Counterman magazine a while ago on the Duramax. Very interesting to read.

the 4300 and 8100 are holdovers from a way way back.

GEN III Vortec engines (4800, 5300, 6000) are new from the ground up. Check out www.gmpowertrain.com.

why isn't the stuff working? Joes signature, behemoth it is, looks funny with all that [url] stuff going on. It's happening in my forum as well and nobody has done anything to make it do that. Is DIY.com buggy?
