contaminated oil

I have an '87 Cougar (3.8L, 6cyl, 120K miles) which until last week was a smooth running car. Then suddenly it bagan losing power ... could barely get around the block. You could hear and feel the power, but it just was not kicking in ... and the exhaust had a exceptionally rich smell. First thing I did was check the fluids ... and it smells like I have gas in my oil. I haven't driven the car since I found this. I drained the oil, refilled with new and changed the oil filter 2X. No milky residue was present (coolant level was unchanged). What would cause gas to be in my oil and how am I to clean this from my engine ?

The engine is running rich and fouling the oil.

Start with my posts and links in my signature file. A tuneup is the first step, along with all filters if it has not been done in a while.
