'98 malibu battery problem

Went to start my car and it was dead. The battery and car are 4.5 yrs old. I charged the battery and it is noe OK. Does anyone know how to perform a load check or how to make sure charging system is working w/o going to a mechanic? I will be going on a long trip for the holidays.

You need professional equipment to ck charging system and battery. Go to Sears or possibly Auto-Zone and let them test it out.

More likley in your case it just gave you the early warning signs that replacement is coming. 4 1/2 is about average for a battery.

I agree with Larry. The battery is likely wasted after 4.5 years.
