electrical connection aftermarket guage
Installing an aftermarket temp sensor on a 1996 cheroke 4.0 litre. Is there an easy way to connect to the ignition? I have no idea where to look for the wire exept for going into the steering column. Also, is there an easy way to connect the lamp on the guage to only work when the lights are turned on? I have thought of connecting the guage directly to the battery, but not sure if that's ok to do or if it would wear the battery down.
The guage is electrical, so my questions pertain both the the guage itself and the light illuminating it.
Help would be much appreciated.

Whoa Nelley. STOP!
Where's your wiring diagram? If you don't have one, check autolibrary.org below or buy a 25 dollar Alldata.com subscription.
You have airbag wires down there to contend with. Don't guess. Get the right information.
What does the gauge manufacturer suggest? Call their hotline and ask. If they don't know, wrong company to buy from!
